There is a split in the pestle, which can be seen in photos, and the mortar has some small light 'cracks' and scratches, which are normal with aged lignum wood, but don't detract at all from the beauty of these pieces. The wood is so strong, the cracks do not weaken the structure. There is also wear on the inside, as well as the base, which is also normal for a 200+ year old piece.
This can be put to use as what it was created for, or just sit on the shelf as a collector's item. This is a large mortar, as some are, but very nicely turned and designed. If you are interested in Lignum Vitae wood, which is the strongest and densest wood in the world
